Over Massimiliano D.
Hi everybody! My name is Massimiliano and I’m a jazz clarinet player and composer from Italy, I’m 27 years old and currently living and studying in Rotterdam.
If you wish to learn how to play the clarinet or the bass clarinet and maybe to approach the wonderful world of jazz and improvisation in a very joung and fresh way, maybe I’m the guy you’re searching for!
Together we can go deeply into the world of clarinet, exploring all his various possibility but also approaching the language of improvisation.
Lessons will be different regarding of the student’s level, wishes and personal goals.
With beginners we'd would spend more time building a good sound and a fluid technique but also listening to music and enjoying playing simple tunes together, to get familiar with the music language.
For the advanced students we will work on developing a personal style of playing, being able to improvise on any kind of chord progression and music style and transcribing solos of their favourite musicians.
I will also spend some time speaking about how to make our own music, studying basic principles of composition and maybe starting writing something together and arranging it for a small band.
I’m actually doing my bachelor degree in jazz composition with M. Paul Van Bruggen and my master degree in clarinet with Alex Simu at Codarts.
I started my journey into music at the age of 13 with the electric huitar, that I played for seven years, before falling in love with the clarinet and the bass clarinet at the age of 19.
Since I met the clarinet my life totally changed, and I really started taking music seriously, studying from five to seven hours every day but never losing the joy of it.
In 2013 I passed the audition for Siena Jazz University (the most important jazz institute in Italy) and in 2017 I got my bachelor degree in Jazz Clarinet.
In Siena I deeply explored the clarinet and the jazz and improvisation language, studying with great musicians like Miguel Zenon, Ben Wendel, Anat Cohen, Achille Succi, Maurizio Giammarco, Mirco Mariottini and Stefano Battaglia.
Currently I’m playing in the Codarts Big Band and in January we made a recording with Reinier Baas.
I’m also having many side projects both as a clarinet/bass clarinet player and as composer.
I’m writing music for Theater, Dance and classical or modern ensambles.
The artists that enspired me the most are from various musical fields,
as a clarinet player I deeply loved and studied Eric Dolphy, Jimmy Giuffre, Ben Goldberg, Tony Scott and Lester Young.
Some of my favourite artists are Tom Waits, David Bowie, Duke Ellington, Bjork, Olivier Messiaen, Igor Stravinsky, Bela Bartok, Buena Vista Social Club and many others!
My experiences as a teacher
As a teacher I have different experiences:
In Italy I was doing a weekly workshop in primary schools with children from 8 to 12 years old about soundpainting and improvising music taking inspiration from a book or a cartoon.
When I was younger I was also teaching guitar to beginners in the music school of my town.
I enjoy working with student of every age and skill level.
I can teach clarinet, bass clarinet, music theory, arranging and composition from beginners up to advanced/professional level.
I also can teach beginners guitar.
