I am a graduate of Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama with 10 years of experience as a music tutor and as a performing musician. I am an enthusiastic classical guitar, lute, composition and music theory tutor offering encouraging tuition to all ages and abilities.
As an active lutenist and guitarist I perform as a soloist, as well as in chamber music concerts and opera productions. I am a member of a variety of ensembles such as Camera degli Angeli, London Gala Orchestra, Sound a Parley, and Dellingr Duo, with whom I perform in the United Kingdom and The Netherlands. I also give talks to the public about early music and plucked string instruments featured in historical paintings. I am motivated and passionate about performing music to the highest possible standard, and making a positive contribution to cultural and musical life.
Lessons with Luke
In my guitar lessons we would begin with working on posture and technique; with careful regard for handling the instrument correctly, and how to make a well-rounded sound. The majority of the lesson would focus on the piece(s) of music that you are learning, with a view to improving your sound, technique and musical expression over a long term period. I will also offer practice plans to guide your practice between lessons.
Should you wish to pursue an academic musical path, this tuition includes guidance with preparation for your classical guitar or music theory examinations, where we would also work on developing your musicianship through aural training. You may also request lessons in composition, harmony, figured bass and composing a melody.
For students who do not wish to pursue an academic path through playing guitar, lute, composing music, or understanding music theory, my lessons can be suited to your individual ambitions while still aiming for the highest possible standard of musicianship and enjoyment.
My experience as a music tutor has largely been developed through my own private teaching, and I have successfully guided students through their performance and theory examinations for British examination boards such as ABRSM and Trinity. I have also gained experience in education through several British music education programmes designed to support pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds.
