Over Junhyung A.
Hello, my name is Junhyung (but everybody calls me AJ). From the moment I picked up a guitar, I couldn’t put it down, and would spend every break at school and spare moment I had practicing and playing. I love how the direct contact with the strings gives the opportunity to create a huge diversity in sound, resonance and styles all on one guitar.
My roots are in Jazz music, but I enjoy performing and teaching a variety of styles including Pop, Blues, Rock and Finger-style, among others. I find witnessing the musical growth of my students a joyful process and people of all ages and levels are welcome, from beginner to conservatory students and singer/songwriters, as well as those wanting to learn more about music theory and composition. Tried-and-tested guitar methods are used in the lessons, but I also approach, each student individually, depending on what musical style, interests and level you might have. During the lessons there is a lot of playing-together and experimenting with any music you might especially like. In that way we can develop and strengthen your own personal skills and insights, and find a way of playing that suits you best.
In 2008 I came to the Netherlands to study jazz guitar at the conservatory of Rotterdam. After completing a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree, I continued with Phd courses at the University of Leiden for a number of years, during which time I studied with artists such as Jesse van Ruller and Lage Lund. Next to teaching privately and in music schools over several years, I have performed as a soloist, or with both my quintet and trio, at a variety of festivals and venues, such as the Klagenfurt Festival, Bimhuis, LantarenVenster, Herman van Veen Art Center and radio programs, and I have recently released my first solo album.
I teach both at home or at students’ homes in Rotterdam and I also have a few openings for teaching at students’ homes in Amsterdam on Mondays and Thursdays. Gitaarlessen in het Nederlands zijn ook evt mogelijk.
Feel free to contact me and I look forward to meeting you at a trial lesson!
