Since I was a little kid, music has always been more than just a fulfilling activity for me. I soon realized that playing and studying music influences the way we observe, reason and even take our actions. Constantly curious and fascinated by the power of inspiration, I am exploring the borders of ultimate understanding over one’s own potential. Therefore, involving with theory, harmony and improvisation came as natural as an expression of awe to the world around me. Looking back on it, I feel very lucky for blindly choosing the piano as my instrument from the very beginning, as it generously offers me possibilities to explore and easily access the complex world of music, in ways which pretty much no other instrument has to offer.
As a teacher, I believe there is no use in stubbornly forcing information upon other people, no matter how important these are according to my opinion. Rather, my goal is to acknowledge the needs of my pupils and assist them with their own personal development as well as possible. Surely there are universal technical facts one should recognize and master, but in the end every person must find their own unique balance and ultimately become capable of teaching their own selves. Adaptation, patience and persistence towards clearly set goals, are the foundations of my practice. Additionally, a positive atmosphere throughout the lesson is important to ease the process of learning, especially for kids.
Having studied the piano as a performer and chamber musician, I can assist my students with building an honest relationship with the instrument, as well as communicating with other musicians to play together. My background on theory, harmony, counterpoint and their practical application on the piano, allows me to teach a big variety of different pupils, from absolute beginners new to the music language, to the more experienced adventurers who want to build a more in depth understanding on playing music. Depending on ambition and interest, reaching for a high level of performing capability, or studying the music language and the different ways it can be used, are both directions I am willing to take and I do so different days and moments myself. Starting a master’s course in Utrecht conservatory this September, I am looking forward to a year full of new musical experiences, as well sharing them with people that appreciate the same values.
